o Silver Chamber of Sorrows, a series that was not highly promoted, a grand production or contains the most popular cast was able to peak at 42 points, rumored to have beat Liza Wang, Myolie Wu and Bosco Wong’s War of In-Laws II
o Originally, Patrick Tang was suppose to be Zi Sing and not Jack Wu
o Christine Ng doesn’t like acting for period dramas and often declines them, this is a series she made an exempt for
o Originally Nancy Sit was afraid that her motherly image would be ruined by her Siu Dip role and was going to leave during the early filming stages
o It has been 6 years since Shirley Yeung and Nancy Sit have co-operated together
o Although the series is tragic, the cast once off screen loves to fool around and laugh their heads off. They also help each other a lot too since everybody is very professional
o Many of the abusive scenes are real, For example in episode 4, when Shirley Yeung is being whipped by Rebecca Chan
In episode 13, when Rebecca Chan was repetitively smacked by Nancy Sit While filming this scene, Rebecca had offered to let Nancy smack her with a stick. She had to keep her mouth closed with her lips in. Both veterans were hurt; Rebecca more painfully on the mouth (as can see in photo) and Nancy pulled some arm muscles while trying to carefully but painfully hit Rebecca
o In the final episode, everyone questions how Ng Wai Kwok’s Sheung Wan could have possibly survived the car crash when it made a nose dive down a cliff. Apparently there wasn’t enough time so TVB had to cut it out. Which is why sometimes the scenes are sort of cut off due to the fact that they were running on time
o In order to suit her role, Nancy Sit was actually given more padding and wore many layers of clothes to get the fat image
o Nancy Sit and Paul Chun, both childhood stars/ friends has only filmed 2 series together, including Silver Chamber of Sorrows. After 40 years of knowing each other, their cooperation is considered very low compared to other veterans
o The theme song was originally to be sung by Nancy Sit or Ng Wai Kwok (he can sing?) but both decided that it would be best to have someone else sing it this hints that these two cast may be the leading stars of the show (incase you are still wondering)
o While Silver Chamber of Sorrows was airing, Christine Ng and Nancy Wu were participating in Strictly Come Dancing II, Paul Chun paid them a visit both at practice and as a judge at the competition. He even commented on Nancy Wu’s dancing skills.
o Nancy Wu actually had wish for some more screen time for some bickering with Rebecca Chan but was killed off in episode 11
o In the cover of the series, there is one man in the picture who only plays a cameo in the series. He makes no contribution to the actual plot while the female actress who plays Siu Dip’s personal paid, Auntie Mui who has an important role isn’t in the picture.
o Shirley Yeung in real life is really afraid of frogs and cried when she had scenes where she interacted with them
o Although in the actual series, Nancy Wu’s Fei Fei is always seen in the water for a mere 10s but in real life, she spends a much longer time in the freezing cold water
o Although Nancy Sit doesn’t remember, but Ng Wai Kwok and her have actually cooperated together before for a picture and Ng Wai Kwok has kept it up till today.
o In the scene where Nancy Sit, Ng Wai Kwok and Shirley Yeung are crying in front of their ancestor’s room, Shirley wasn’t able to cry the way the director wanted and had to constantly apply eye drops. In the end though, the director decided to only have Nancy Sit’s crying into the series and faded Shirley off.
**wow, they must have done this scene many times cause even Nancy’s crying sounds…eh terrible but in the actual series, in which the director most likely chooses the best scene, she does a lot better.
o One of the topics, male having more power than females actually is really relevant to modern day woman too. The director/ producer made a comment when he read someone post their relevant issue.
**It’s actually still quite relevant to many of us women. My father for example, tends to treat my brother much better. It is important for him to do well but when it comes to a female, it’s less of an issue. I remember one time when I wasn’t able to do an errand and my dad said to me, “There’s no point in being good in academics if you can’t even do such simple task.” I literally was like WTF?? Because one being that he wanted me to grab him a tool and he said it in Chinese. How the heck am I suppose to know that it meant for the sanding thingy? Secondly, psh if my brother wasn’t able to do something he wouldn’t say shiet. Thirdly, if it didn’t freaking matter if I do well in school then why the heck did you discipline me until I did?! BUT before I drag along and getting emotional, I would stop there.
And that's all for now on Silver Chamber of Sorrows: Did You Know?

*****WARNING: spoilers ahead*********
Living by ancient customs Smiles can only be slight smiles Pain can only be slight pain Life, maturity, sickness and death Separates the compelled from the arranged
Sheung’s Silver Chamber is one of the largest gold jewelry companies in Foshan in the Guang Dong province of China. It has established its importance and connections for several years. No matter where the Sheung’s go, they are looked up to and no one dares to disrespect them. Yet behind all the rich and glory is a family ruled by ancient customs and betrayal. Being women was like being an animal. Either give birth to a son to establish the next generation or find yourself to live life in shame. Men can lust all they want while making one simple mistake can cause a beating for the women. Silver Chambers of Sorrows takes you to see China’s adaptation to new legal structures in which family beating is not accepted and drowning your wife is considered illegal. Women would always get the disadvantage but it would not be long before the Sheung Family’s women strike back…
My Notable Characters:
Sheung Hang (Hung) aka Big Master, Master Sheung or simply Master Sheung Hang is the owner of the Silver Chamber which was passed along to him from generation to generation. As the eldest son and master of the Sheung family, he was raised to expand the Sheung Family for a future generation and maintain the family business. Being a very traditional man, his acts are selfish and he is stubborn. In order to save the family business, he even tricks his younger brother into marriage. He loves glory and he will demolish those who try to ruin it for him. Yet what comes around goes around, and things will not always go the way he wants it to…
Played by Paul Chun: Bravo to Paul!! Usually he plays the nice guy in series but in Silver, he does not fail as the villain. His character is very schemeful and too filled with traditional customs. Everything he does is all meant to lead to his own desires. He’s cruel and at one point, he just seemed inhuman. Paul really plays this character well and he does have that “manly” aura. His facial expressions and his tone of voice are terrific!
Choi Siu Dip aka Madame (Dai Lai Lai), House Keeper ( Dai Dong Ga), Siu Dip Choi Siu Dip was from a well bred family and was arranged into marriage with Sheung Hang. She was only able to bore a daughter and after many more attempts, she was unable to bore another child again. Sadly, one of her personal maids she married along with seduced Sheung Hang and became the second wife. Siu Dip was humiliated and further more so when the maid was able to bore a son for the family. Yet she is highly respected by everyone for her work as a house keeper and a mother. She is trusted by Sheung Hang and is often the one he makes decisions with. Feeling she did not do her part in helping to proceed the family, she does all she can to please her husband. She even finds herself sacrificing her daughter for her husbands needs and looking away from her conscience of ruining her daughter’s future. But eventually she wakes up and finds herself doing things against her husband’s wishes. Her place in the family begins to tumble…
Played by Nancy Sit: Nancy truly fits her title as “Ah Jie!” She was one of the enjoyable actresses to watch in this series. Her expressions and actions to be evil is pretty heart shattering because I was literally scared of her. She also didn’t fail to have that “in charge” aura and I cheered whenever she was handling things. The character Siu Dip is a complex character, she’s smart but she isn’t capable to do everything. She is evil but you can’t blame her. At first I didn’t really like the character because she seemed pretty weak to me and I was really frustrated but eventually I realized who she truly was. I absolutely loved her! Nancy Sit didn’t fail to play this role, whether she was crying, yelling or simply being capable, it was captivating.
Ching Sau Hang aka 3rd Mistress or 3rd sister in-law Sau Hang, since marrying into the Sheung Family was given the privilege of living a peaceful life. She was careful to not get into trouble and was barely ever forced to do things she didn’t want to do. But the moment she saw Sheung Wan again, her hurt burned with anger and was dragged into trouble. She found herself doing everything to make him jealous or make him notice her. But her love for him overcame her hatred and that moment began her troubles. She was not trusted by Sheung Hang and was given a beating. She realized her best friend in the family had deceived her and Sheung Wan was refusing to elope with her. Twisted by love and hate she finds herself no longer trusting anyone. And those who have hurt her will have to regret…
Played by Christine Ng: A splendid performance by Christine Ng. Although the character, Sau Hang I had found despicable at times and foolish, Christine really played the part well. Sau Hang’s character is more complex than Siu Dip because the character does lots of evil deeds but she also feels guilty. She often finds herself having split personalities and a bad addiction to alcohol. Christine was able to express those emotions really well, and I haven’t seen such performance since Charmaine Sheh’s role in 2000’s Heavenly Sword & Dragon Sabre. Although Sau Hang takes my negative remarks but Christine gets my thumbs up.
Everybody gave it their best and I loved many of the actress/actors! Whether it was the head maid, Dung Mui (sorry unsure of her real name) or Rebecca Chan’s Nin Wong, everyone played their part well. Their were some that didn’t captivate me as much but the rest of the cast makes up for it :D
Family Locks: One of the themes, from beginning to end was freedom. The women of this story suffer so much pain, that they all want to leave the Sheung Family. At first, it appeared like only Sau Hang wanted to, but by the end of the show, it turns out many of them did and the final one to admit it, was Siu Dip. They’ve all had enough of the fights for power and they’re all sick of being abused by Sheung Hang. From what appeared to be a desire for only one woman, turns out to be a desire for all of them. They no longer want to be trapped behind the Sheung’s locks, they are tired and they are sick of it. Power no longer becomes worth craving for.
The Chemistry The Chemistry:
Sheung Wan x Sau Hang: Do they really love each other? Yes but I don’t think the relationship was built strong enough. Sheung Wan was always there for Sau Hang, trying to protect her and save her. Sau Hang, went through all that trouble, just so she could be with him. But what their love really lacked were some actual “couple” scenes. They had scenes where they were…hugging but it always ended up being Sheung Wan pushing her away. They never did have that moment where they were seen having fun together or a moment of understanding. They were the main couple yet I felt there was no warmness in it. TVB made this couple seem like they suffer so much together but they forgot to actually add in moments of actual “love” in it. I really enjoyed how they finished this relationship; there was finally that “understanding” between them.
Zi Sing x Chau Guk: They started off really funny because Zi Sing was really a jinx to Chau Guk. As much as Zi Sing tries, Chau Guk would not like him. There wasn’t a chance for them to actually develop a relationship until the end because during the whole time, Zi Sing was still trying to woo her. If there were more after the ending, with them, I’m pretty sure they’d be a cute couple.
Sheung Hang x Siu Dip: They didn’t marry out of love and throughout the story; we know Sheung Hang doesn’t love her. But towards the end, TVB gave them “couple scenes” and you can tell that although they do not exactly love each other, they do have a relationship. They both understand each other really well and at one point in time, you could tell Sheung Hang had really loved Siu Dip. I think it was because Sheung Hang was busy with the other wives and the business that he neglected his feelings. It was really surprising since in an interview, it was stated that they aren’t suppose to have an actual relationship but by the end of episode 16, and the beginning of episode 17 you notice it.
Sheung Hang x Sau Hang: This was a single sided relationship. Sheung Hang I believe actually loved Sau Hang. There were many scenes where Sheung hang just treats her better and times where he shows his true feelings towards her while she’s unconscious. It showed a really different view of Sheung Hang and you can tell he does have some softness. Even when he found out all Sau Hang has done to him, he saves her and sets her free.
Siu Dip x Sau Hang x Nin Wong x Fei Fei: Although they are all love rivals but besides the times when they are scheming against each other, there are times when you see some “sister-ness.” At some of the most down times, in regards to her son, Nin Wong actually turns to Siu Dip for help. Sau Hang and Siu Dip do look out for each other and treats each other like sisters. Fei Fei does listen to Siu Dip and bickers with Nin Wong. In a way, behind the scemes, they all ended up having the same desire, which was to be free from the family locks.
I decided not to analyze the song but I can tell you that this theme is really evident in this series. If you are interested in knowing, I can suggest you waiting for MetalAZNWarrior @ TVB Musing because I am anticipating this article of his too when he has finished Silver Chamber of Sorrows.
Silver Chamber of Sorrows:
The Chinese meaning, I have no clue if it relates to the story but the English title, it really does. The Sheung’s Silver Chamber, it caused lots of deceiving. For this business, Sau Hang and Sheung Wan were split apart. For this business, Hor Yi was forced into an arranged marriage. For this business, Sheung Hang did a lot of harmful things to protect it. For this business, a lot of characters had suffered to keep it running. Behind the beauty of the chamber that it represents, is the many misfortunes of the family.
The Ending Thoughts:
I’m really glad TVB didn’t choose the either really sad or a really happy ending. They gave one that suited the series, there were some good things that happened but the sad things forever remained. The series started off with Siu Dip and they ended it off with Siu Dip. The themes of this story were not forgotten and they were all given a conclusion.
Why I love this series so much:
The theme remained from beginning to end. I really don’t like it when series end off on a different tone from the beginning.
The series constantly improved. It just keeps getting better and better. It doesn’t ride a roller coaster where it has some high moments and some low moments. You can literally see that from its ratings.
It’s different.Although it has been compared to War and Beauty, War and Destiny and Heart of Greed, the feeling is very different. In War and Beauty, it was literally schemes after schemes. War and Destiny, it was more on a romance side with pure feelings. Heart of Greed is like dramatic family feud. At first, I though that was what Silver Chamber of Sorrows was all about ( I am going to write up an analogy between these 4 series) but it turned out to be different.
The series didn’t rely on its cast. A lot of the time, we judge series by the cast. People don’t need to even watch the series and would decided whether or not the series would be good. This series didn’t have the golden actors i.e Bobby, Esther, Gigi or Ada. It doesn’t have the fa dans like Tavia, Linda or Myolie. Even the veterans aren’t made up of Liza, Adam, Louise or Michelle. Don’t get me wrong, this series is still made up of a terrific cast (I LOVE THEM ALL!!) but it isn’t ones many people - especially TVB appreciate. Which is what made the series all the more lovable. It really shows that talent or best series dont have to be made up of “A – list” actors or whoever is popular for thier role, to be good. I cant tell you how many comments I’ve read where people refuse to give this series a chance because it doesn’t contain their term of “A – list” cast. Just because they aren’t in there, they determine this series to be a failure. But Silver Chambers of Sorrows proved it wrong and was able to make people drop their glasses “deet ngan geng”
So, I’m really hoping that people would give this series a chance, and not base it on a 1 episode case. I was going to give up on Forensic Heroes II cause I didn’t like its first episode but I decided to watch a bit more and I find I kind of like it. Don’t watch this series with a certain view on what will happen. Keep an open mind and you might be surprised.

The ratings for Silver's final week was really good!! The average ratings were 34 points!!! But the series peaked at 40 points in the ending episode, even thought it did not have a happy ending. That is a total of 252万 people watching in that episode!!! WOOO!!!!! And just in case you guys dont believe me.... the originaly article is here: http://ent.tom.com/2008-05-27/001F/11231592.html although some sites says it peaked at 37 points, either way it's still very very good for Silver Chambers of Sorrows
I was lucky to find the full CD version and decided to share it with all of you...it's really different from my long version I found but still nice to listen to.
Photos taken from TVB.com that I liked :D
As well, I just noticed that there were commercial scenes that were originally cut out when i watched it and it wasnt until recently did I know there were any. So sharing some of it with you guys (sorry kind of bad quality)
Side note: I think this is one of the series where TVB used a lot of photoshop for..it's really pretty. :D
I've stopped posting any more reviews because now I think I'm at the point where I'll basically tell you everything!! So much is happening, its unbelievable!! I never seen such abuse before to women...I cant wait to see the final 2 hr long episode!!!

Paul Chun’s son hope's to join the industry to become a singer
Paul Chun Pui who plays the Evil Master in “The Silver Chamber of Sorrows “ and Charmaine Li attended Nancy Sit’s Metro Radio interview yesterday. Nancy stated “ The Silver Chamber of sorrows “ viewer ratings for last Wednesday was 34 points which broke the record for the highest ratings this year for a series broadcasted at 8pm”. Although the series has a sad bitter storyline, the cast members had a lot of fun working together. Paul would often invite the cast and crew for dinner which indicated their good working relations. Paul explained that he started out as a Child actor similar to Nancy Sit. He started acting at the age of 3 years old and is very close with real brother’s John Chiang (actor) and director Lee Dung Shing. He laughed that because he is the oldest they used to be afraid of him but when they grew up Paul became afraid of them because of their powerful abilities in acting.
Asked whether his son feel’s pressure as the family are involved in the Entertainment circle? Paul replies that his son is hoping to join the industry to become a singer. Even though Paul feels that the entertainment circle is very hardwork and too competitive he will respect his son’s decision and will support him.
It is believed that the 8pm has a curse where it can never get high ratings. Besides War of In- laws 2 (this was from an article), no other series airing during that time in the year 2008 has the ratings ever been high. Silver Chambers of Sorrows, which was never highly anticipated by people due to the lack in VERY popular stars has surpassed that and broke the record!!
Congratulations Silver Chambers of Sorrows!!! WOOT WOOT!!
Now my entire blog is Silver Chamber Of Sorrows!!! :D
Thanks very much to Janeal!!! Janeal made this layout for me tehheee..and ofcourse I requested it to be Silver Chamber theme. Phew...took me forever to add in my own codes..in stead of the easy way blogger usually provides. Anyways I'm loving Silver Chambers!!!
Oooo..anybody like the avatar i made??? teehee i made it :D and of course..its Silver Chamber!!!
Nin Wong (Rebecca Chan) continues to cause trouble with her words leadin to her sister in-law (as in Sheung Family's 3rd daughter) to be punished the mother in-law (Suet Nei). Luckily Sheung Wan (Ng Wai Kwok) arrives on time to save her.
Not learning from her mistakes, Nin Wong continues to spread rumours and gossip about her making her life difficult.
Siu Dip (Nancy Sit) was furious when she heard Nin Wong's false accusation and ordered her to follow her.
At the ancestor room, Nin Wong is told to kneel down and Siu Dip lectures her.
Nin Wong could care less.
Nin Wong: What makes you think you can hit me?
Siu Dip: The fact that I am your mistress and you are my maid. The fact that I am the elder one and you are the younger one!
A dispute began between Siu Dip and Nin Wong and Nin Wong began to step over the border causing Siu Dip to punish her.
Siu Dip used a ruler to smack Nin Wong's mouth many times until her mouth was red and began to bleed.
Siu Dip: I don’t care if you feel it’s unfair! I’m warning you, every time you say something wrong means every time I will hit you!
Meanwhile, Sau Hang (Christine Ng) was haunted by Fei Fei (Nancy Wu) and worried she was going to take revenge on her.
Sau Hang began to turn to alcohol for relief. She continues to believe that everybody was wrong and she was just doing her job.
Towards the end, Siu Dip and Hor Yi (Charmaine Li) were finally okay again. Both of them worry of the fate of Sheung's 3rd daughter. If Sheung Hang (Paul Chun) treated his daughter so poorly, hope is dim for his sister.
My Thoughts: Oh my gosh, Fei Fei is soo freaky!!! Sau Hang is getting crazier! Ha!! Siu Dip finally punishes Nin Wong!!! There are some other information about this scene but I'll write it up in my fianl review..:P I have a feeling SHeung Hang is going to be selfish again and screw his sister over. >:P
Side Note: Oh my freaking gosh!! Is it possible that all the evil characters show up in one episode??? ARgh... whoever wrote Silver, they did a good job of portraying the evil characters!!!
Sheung Family Turned Upside Down
The episode starts off with Hor Yi (Charmaine Li) finally being allowed free from the attic. Sheung Hang (Paul Chun) angrily yells at her and seeing this, Sau Hang (Christine Ng) goes and comfort her. While chatting about a women's fate, Hor Yi accidently tells Sau Hang that it was Siu Dip (Nancy Sit) who helped break the arranged marriage.
Meanwhile, Siu Dip finds out Sheung Hang intended to kill Fei Fei (Nancy Wu) and tries her best to warn her but she is interferred. Fei Fei is captured at the moment she started fooling around with Sheung Wan's brother - in law (Eric Li). Sheung Hang gathers people to beat them and send them to the river.
During this time, it is the moment of confrontation between Siu Dip and Sau Hang. Everything began to make sense and now Siu Dip knows that if Sau Hang was not going to let go of Fei Fei and she herself wont be either. Sau Hang intends to take revenge.
At the river, Sheung Wan (Ng Wai Kwok) and Wing Tung (Winnie Yueng) are threatened / black mailed by Sheung Hang. Sheung Wan has no choice but to oblige in order for the lives of his brother in law and Fei Fei.
Back at home, Siu Dip continues to worry if Fei Fei was alright. She goes to Sheung Hang and finds that Sau Hang was with him and that he knew the things Siu Dip has done to rebuttle him. (Sau Hang told on her) He angrily threatens her again causing Siu Dip to be flooded with pain and anger.
At the end of this scene, we can tell that Siu Dip and Sau Hang have sort of switched places. Sheung Hang now only trusts Sau Hang.
Later on that night, Sheung Hang tests Sau Hang's loyalty through killing Fei Fei.
Another character enters the story which is Sheung Family's 3rd daughter's mother -in law (Suet Nei). This mother in law was amrried to a lawyer that was given special treatment by the Emperor. With this status she is picky, rude and single minded. She brings lots of trouble to the Sheung Family!
Here the Sheung Family's 3rd daughter just accidently said the wrong card ( the in-law is blind) and as punishment, the mother in law pours hot tea on her!!
My Thoughts: I cant believe this but there are soo many more people to hate now!! X Sheung Hang (Paul Chun) X Sau Hang (Christine Ng) X Nin Wong (Rebecca Chan) X Mother - in law (Suet Nei)
I cant wait to see episode 13 though!! Siu Dip finally releases some anger!!! And Sau Hang is going to be haunted for what she did. I swear, I really hope Sau Hang clears up and realize that the real bad guy is Sheung Hang!! She's practically ruining the lives of everyone!!! First Wing Tung (Winnie Yeung), then Fei Fei, then Siu Dip. ARGH!! She use to be such a nice person!!!
